Strong Doesn’t Mean Okay: Debunking the Myth of Mental Health

Beheld Podcast Blog

You know the look: the polished face, the calendar full of back-to-back meetings, the “I’m good!” that comes out so fast you don’t even notice you’re lying.

You’re strong.
You’re doing all the things.
People even praise you for how much you carry with grace.

But here’s the truth we’re peeling back in this episode of Beheld:
Strong doesn’t mean okay.

And honestly? We’re tired of pretending it does.

The Myth That’s Been Killing Us Softly

Somewhere along the way, many of us—especially women, especially caretakers and achievers—were handed a script.
It goes like this:

“If you can hold it together, you’re fine.”
“If you’re still functioning, there’s no reason to ask for help.”
“If you’re strong, you don’t need support.”

We learned to equate high-functioning with high-wellness.
But guess what? That’s not how emotional health works.

You can be:

  • Meeting deadlines and still be deeply anxious.

  • Showing up for your people while barely present for yourself.

  • Getting things done and still feel numb, overwhelmed, or unwell.

That doesn’t make you broken.
It makes you human.

Mental Health Doesn’t Always Look Like a Breakdown

Sometimes it looks like smiling while silently spiraling.
Sometimes it looks like being so “on” all the time that your nervous system forgets what peace feels like.
And sometimes, it’s that quiet voice that says:
“I’m so tired—but no one would understand if I stopped.”

Here’s what we need to remember:
Mental health isn’t about whether you can survive the storm.
It’s about whether you feel safe to rest when the storm passes.

So… What Does Okay Really Look Like?

Okay isn’t perfection.
It’s presence.
It’s the ability to pause.
To feel joy without guilt.
To ask for help without shame.
To say, “Actually, I’m not okay,” and trust that it doesn’t make you any less worthy.
